On entering Year 7, students at AJA are taught in separate Boys’ and Girls’ Secondary Schools. The Secondary Schools have identical facilities designed to afford each student full opportunities to develop considerate, knowledgeable, inquiring and articulate members of the global society.
The Secondary Schools places an extremely strong emphasis on parental communication. The involvement of every parent will greatly assist each child to become a happy member of the Secondary Schools. Secondary Schools staff members are to take any opportunity to establish closer bonds with parents and break down the hidden barriers that often exist.
Each of the Secondary Schools is equipped with the most current information technology facilities. There are also spacious and well-equipped specialist teaching rooms and science laboratories.
Each Secondary Schools student in every year level is strongly encouraged to participate in the after-school activity programme. The two schools operate a segregated activity programme on separate days. All staff members are expected to assist in the supervision and running of these activities.
From September 2007, the Middle Years Programme (MYP)* will be
implemented intoYears 7 to 9. The design of each course prepares students for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) programme, which runs in Years 10 and 11.
All students study English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities (History and Geography), Information Technology, French or Arabic, Music, Physical Education, and Visual Arts. Students from a native Arabic language background may study Islamic Studies and Islamic History while international students will study Spanish.
* As a candidate school
Through Years 10 and 11, each student follows the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) courses. The IGCSE is administered by the ‘University of Cambridge International Examinations’ (CIE) and is one of the most recognised qualifications around the world. IGCSE courses are notable for developing vital educational skills such as oral skills, problem solving and investigative skills. The resulting qualification provides a solid foundation for higher-level courses like the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. AJA is a fully accredited international examination centre for the CIE.
The IGCSE programme at AJA has a course structure enabling all students to study English as a First or Second Language, Mathematics, one of three Sciences (Chemistry, Biology or Physics) and either Foreign Language French, or Arabic as a First Language. In addition, there are three elective courses with choices including Business Studies, Art and Design, English Literature, Geography, Economics, IT and Music. Students also have the opportunity to study the non-IGCSE award subject of Islamic Studies and Islamic History.
Each student receives a certificate from the CIE indicating his or her IGCSE grades, upon completion of the examination. The IGCSE programme at AJA has a structure that can lead to the student receiving the second CIE award of ‘International Certificate of Education’.
